Advantage Setif after first leg

by Graeme Jackson

Sun October 26, 18:32

Algeria’s Entente Setif held hosts AS Vita to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the 2014 CAF Champions League final at the Stade Tata Rapahel in Kinshasa, DR Congo, on Sunday.

The result is a favourable one for the North Africans, but they will still feel it was a missed opportunity after twice holding the lead through an own goal from Bawaka Mabele and a second half strike from the excellent Akram Djahnit.

However, Vita’s inspirational Lema Mabidi scored two equalisers – the first a penalty and the second a jaw-dropping long-range effort – to ensure his side head into next week’s second leg match in Blida, Algeria, on level terms.

Vita settled the quicker of the two teams and created some early half-chances for the likes of Lema Mabidi and Ndombe Mubele.

However, Setif had the first clear chance on goal in the 10th minute, with Akram Djahnit setting up Abdelmalik Ziaya but his attempt to flick the ball on target with a back-heel skidded wide of the far post.

Yet less than 10 minutes later the Algerians broke the deadlock, with Djahnit’s corner kick from the right wing deflected into his own goal by Vita defender Bawaka Mabele to hand the Black Eagles a precious 1-0 away lead.

And it was almost 2-0 to Setif in the 41st minute, with Abdelghani Demou breaking free down the right and firing a fierce effort on target, but Vita goalkeeper Lukong Bongaman somehow tipped the ball onto his crossbar.

Vita were handed a lifeline in injury time at the end of the first half, with defender Mohamed Lagraa perhaps harshly adjudged to have handled the ball in his own 18-yard area and the referee pointed to the spot. Lema Mabidi coolly scored from the penalty to make it 1-1 at half time.

The opening minutes of the second half saw the hosts pick up where they left off before the break and Mubele nearly put them ahead with a fierce drive that Setif’s Abdelwahab Khedairia tipped onto his crossbar.

However, in the 57th minute the Algerians reclaimed the lead. Akram Djahnit and Abdelmalik Ziaya combined beautifully on a swift counter attack before the former rounded the goalkeeper and tapped home from close range to make it 2-1.

Vita responded by making two attack-minded changes, sending on Emmanuel Ngudikama and Magola Mapanda from the substitutes’ bench. But it was their scorer from the first half, Mabidi, who netted a brilliant equaliser with an unstoppable long-range effort in the 77th minute to level the scores at 2-2.
