Mazembe dispatch Sundowns in Lubumbashi

Sun April 05, 19:30

Two first-half goals by Rainford Kalaba, Mbwana Samatta and one in the second stanza by Roger Assale ensured TP Mazembe booted Mamelodi Sundowns by 3-1 (3-2 on aggregate) out of the CAF Champions League at Stade TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi, DRC on Sunday afternoon.

The victory means Les corbeaux avenged their 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Brazilians in South Africa two weeks ago.

Substitute Percy Tau found the consolation goal with six minutes to go for the visitors after an assist by the experienced Mame Niang.

The hosts attacked Pitso Mosimane’s men in the early stages of the match, but goalkeeper Dennis Onyango was alert and came out to make numerous saves.

In the 10th minute defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele had to make a crucial clearance in front of the goal as Mazembe continued to pile pressure on the Tshwane giants.

Coach Pitso Mosimane was a concerned man when Khama Billiat was fouled in a tough tackle right in front of the home bench and was stretchered off the field, but the Zimbabwean managed to come back.

In the 22nd minute,Teko Modise unleashed a powerful long range shot but couldn’t trouble the experienced Robert Kidiaba.

The hosts broke the deadlock through Kalaba in the 36th minute to give Mazembe the deserved lead.

On the stroke of half-time Tanzanian-born Mbwana Samatta found the back of the net to make it 2-0 for the Lubumbashi-based outfit.

Just after coming from the tunnel, Mosimane introduced Anthony Laffor and sacrificed Themba Zwane.

Four minutes into the half Cote D’Ivoire-born Assale made it three for the Patrice Carteron coached outfit, a goal which made things tough for the South Africans.

In the 68th minute Onyango delivered a superb save down low from a TP break away and Mosimane introduced Mame Niang who nearly scored from Siyanda Zwane’s delivery in the 76th minute.

The only goal for the visitors came through Percy Tau who received a pass from Niang - he easily headed in and that was the end of Sundowns continental journey.
