Zamalek secured a 3-1 home win in El Gouna against Rayon Sports on Sunday, in their CAF Confederation Cup opener.
The ‘White Knights’ were back to action for the first time since the Air Defence Stadium disaster that saw twenty of their fans lose their life in a dramatic stampede on February 8.
The hosts took the lead after seven minutes of play through winger Ahmed Eid from the penalty spot, and double their advantage in the 37th minute thanks to an own goal by Emmanuel Imanishimwe from a Ahmed Tawfik cross.
Zamalek added to the visitors’ misery just before half time with Ahmed Eid heading home a cross from Hazem Emam at the far post, while the Rwandans, who missed a penalty attempt in the 32nd minute, managed to pull a goal back in the second half through Isaac Muganza.
Portuguese coach Jesualdo Ferreira’s men will take their two-goal advantage to Kigali in three weeks’ time for the return leg, in order to finish the job and book their spot in the round of 16 of Africa’s second-tier club competition.
