CAF Champions League holders ES Sétif kicked off the defence of their title with a 1-1 away draw against Real Banjul in Brikama on Saturday, in the first leg of their round of 32 tie.
After a goalless first half, the hosts took the lead before the hour mark through winger Ablie Jallow.
However, the ‘Black Eagles’ managed to fight back with a 72nd minute equaliser thanks to defender Mohamed Bouchar.
The Gambians, who got past the preliminary round of the competition with a 2-1 aggregate win over Barrack Young Controllers of Liberia, will have no choice but to find the back of the net at the stade du 8 mai 1945 in Sétif in a fortnight to cause a big upset and extend their continental journey.
But the Algerians will remain the favourites to progress after scoring a precious goal on the road, and are expected to finish the job in front of their home crowd.
