Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien took a step toward the last eight of the CAF Confederation Cup with a 2-0 home victory over ASEC Mimosas on Saturday night.

Ali Maaloul netted on the stroke of half time to put the North Africans ahead, and they doubled their advantage in the second stanza to put themselves well in charge of the two-legged contest.

Having been knocked out of the Champions League on penalties by Algeria’s MC El Eulma in the second round, Sfaxien will be determined to progress into the last eight of Africa’s second-tier club competition.

However, Ivory Coast giants ASEC, who have beaten Al Ittihad and Onze Createurs in the Confed Cup thus far, will look to turn the tie around in the return game in Abidjan on the weekend of 5-7 June.
