USM Alger secured a 2-1 away win over ES Sétif on Saturday night, in their Group B opener of the 2015 CAF Champions League.
Two second half goals from striker Mohamed Seguer and midfielder Nacereddine Khoualed proved enough to secure three crucial points for the visitors in this Algerian derby.
Former JS Saoura hitman Kaddour Beldjilali came close to putting USMA ahead on the half an hour mark, while midfielder Zinedine Ferhat had a penalty appeal turned down by the referee a few minutes later.
And the ‘Black Eagles’ were somehow lucky to go into the break 0-0.
However, Mohamed Seguer ultimately gave USM Alger the lead at the hour mark, with Nacereddine Khoualed adding number two with less than 20 minutes to go.
Former MC Oran forward Lyes Kourbia pulled a goal back for the defending champions five minutes from time, but that was too little too late for Kheireddine Madoui’s men.
USMA got their continental campaign off to a great start, joining Al Merreikh at the top of the group after the Sudanese’s 2-0 victory over MC El Eulma in Omdurman on Friday evening.
