Smouha SC: 0 (0)
TP Mazembe: 2 (1) – Kalaba (40’), Adjei (82’)
TP Mazembe sealed a convincing 2-0 victory over Smouha SC in Alexandria on Friday, in their Group A clash of the CAF Champions League.
Unanswered goals from Rainford Kalaba and Daniel Adjei either side of half-time sent the DR Congo giants top of their group on 5 points.
Mazembe enjoyed most of the possession in the first 45 minutes of the game, with Smouha trying their luck on the counter-attack without threatening veteran keeper Robert Kidiaba.
And the visitors deservedly took the lead in the 40th minute, with Zambian playmaker Rainford Kalaba finding the top corner of the net following a good combination with Malian midfielder Adama Traoré.
One goal up at the break, Patrice Carteron’s men kept the momentum going as the second half resumed, but with their opponents upping their game and moving forward in quest of an equaliser.
However, Ghanaian midfielder Daniel Adjei added to the Egyptians’ misery in the 82nd minute with Mazembe’s number two, sealing a 2-0 win for the Lubumbashi-based outfit who finished the game one man up following Ayman Ashraf’s red card two minutes from time for a second booking.
Sudanese heavyweights Al Hilal will have the opportunity to reclaim the first place on Sunday, when they battle Moghreb Tetouan in Morocco in the other Group A fixture.
