Castro, Nthethe humble Chiefs

Ten-man Kaizer Chiefs failed to bag a win when they faced Mamelodi Sundowns in the Absa Premiership, as they were humbled 3-1 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday night.

A second half penalty from Thabo Nthethe, an own goal by Willard Katsande and a first-half header from Leonardo Castro ensured the Brazilians marched on as league leaders with 62 points from 27 matches.

However, a solitary goal by the red-carded Lorenzo Gordinho in the opening half ensured Amakhosi had something to cheer about, but they are now placed at the third spot with 44 points.

As was expected, the affair started on a high, although it was delayed by 15 minutes and got underway at 20:30, with the hosts beginning their attack through Khama Billiat taking a shot, but it went over Itumeleng Khune's posts in the fifth minute.

Just after 10 minutes, Chiefs created a good opportunity for Bernard Parker but the ex-Bafana Bafana international couldn't have a good touch as he was watched by defender Nthethe.

In the 16th minute, Castro unleashed a shot outside of the box in front of the Amakhosi defence but Khune was alert to collect the ball.

Following good ball possession by Steve Komphela's men, the Brazilians dispossessed them and received a set piece in the 21st minute.

The set piece was delivered and Chiefs' defence failed to deal with it as it landed in Hlompho Kekana's path, however, his shot was cleared but Keagan Ritchie looked to have handled the ball in the penalty area.

With 15 minutes of the half remaining, Amakhosi received a corner, they played it short before George Maluleka whipped in the ball into the box and Gordinho pounced on the far post to hand Chiefs the lead, beating Nthete to the ball.

Although the replay showed it to have been scored by a hand, the referee allowed the goal to stand and Chiefs continued to attack, with Katsande's header going wide in the 40th minute.

However, on the stroke of half time, Castro pulled one back for Pitso Mosimane's men following a brilliant set piece from Billiat on the left flank and his header in the box beat Khune.

It was 1-1 at the interval, the second half had the same pace from both sides and Maluleka looked to have been downed in the box but his protest for a penalty was not given.

Following good interplay, Erick Mathoho took a shot in the 55th minute but couldn't find the target and a minute later he was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Defender Nthethe raised his hand and beat Khune, scoring from the spot to make it 2-1. A few minutes later, Gordinho intentionally handled the ball and was shown his second yellow and left the field of play.

The pain was not over for Amakhosi as Katsande fouled Castro on the left flank and Billiat delivered a great set piece before Chiefs' Zimbabwean international scored in his own net in the 70th minute, handing Sundowns a 3-1 lead.

In the end, Steve Komphela's men failed to break Sundowns' defence and the Tshwane giants claimed the full three points. They now lead the second-placed Bidvest Wits by six points.
