Ben Motshwari's goal helped Bidvest Wits stun Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday evening.

As a result the Clever Boys moved to the top of the league log standings, while the Brazilians dropped down to second on the table.

The match got off to a lively start with Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango pulling off decent saves to deny Wits duo Sifiso Myeni and Reeve Frosler in the early stages of the game.

The Brazilians also had chances to the take the lead, but Percy Tau and Khama Billiat were indecisive at times while in possession of the ball in the Clever Boys box.

It was the Clever Boys who broke the deadlock with four minutes left before half-time when Sifiso Myeni's curling cross was headed home by Ben Motshwari to make it 1-0 to Wits.

Sundowns attacking midfielder Themba Zwane had a glorious chance to level matters in the 45th minute, but his effort hit the upright and Wits were leading 1-0 at the interval.

With his side trailing, Pitso Mosimane made a double substitution on the hour-mark - introducing Fares Hachi and Yannick Zakri for Themba Zwane and Anele Ngcongca.

The two goalkeepers Onyango and Moeneeb Josephs were not seriously tested in the second-half and the battle for control of the midfield saw several players receiving yellow cards.

As a result second-half substitutes Hachi and Daine Klate, the Wits midfielder, were both sent off in the late stages of the match as the two teams battled for control of the match.

In the end, Wits were able to defend very well in the closing stages of the match and they emerged 1-0 winners on the night.
