MC Alger have risen to the top of Group B in the CAF Confederation Cup with a 2-1 home win over Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien on Tuesday night.
The match at the Stade du 5 Juillet Stadium in Algiers saw Mouloudia claim a victory which lifts them to four points - one ahead of Mbabane Swallows (who defeated Platinum Stars in the other Group B match earlier today) and CSS.
The hosts drew first blood just past the midway point of the first half when Hichem Nekkache found the back of the net to make it 1-0.
However, Sfaxien ensured they went to half time on level terms at 1-1 after Tunisian international midfielder Karim Aouadhi scored in the 41st minute.
The early stages of the second half were tightly contested, but just over 20 minutes after the restart MC Alger reclaimed the lead, with Abderahmane Hachoud getting the better of Sfaxien’s defence.
The Tunisian side’s hopes of salvaging something from the match were dealt a major blow with just over 10 minutes to play when Mohamed Ndoye received a red card.
The teams will return to Confederation Cup action on the first weekend of June, with Alger away to Swallows in Swaziland, while Sfaxien will host Stars in Tunisia.
