South Sudan held Uganda to a 0-0 draw in the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier Central-East Zone first-leg match at the Juba Stadium in Juba on Friday.
The Bright Stars and the Cranes will meet again in the second-leg encounter on Saturday, 22 July 2017.
Derrick Nsibambi thought he had handed the Cranes an early goal after a bright start by the visitors.
However, the Ugandan striker's goal was disallowed for offside by referee Idris Mehammed Osman from Eritrea.
The Bright Stars played long balls and crosses into the Cranes box as they looked to dominate the aerial battle.
But Uganda goalkeeper Isma Watenga dealt well with the crosses and long balls ensuring that the first-half ended goalless.
Uganda were awarded a penalty a few minutes into the second-half after Milton Kariisa was fouled in the Sudan box.
Geofrey Sserunkuma, Uganda captain, then stepped up and he was denied by Sudan goalkeeper Daniel Khemis from the spot-kick.
The Bright Stars were oozing with confidence following Khemis' superb penalty save.
Uganda coach Milutin Sredojevic responded by introducing Brian Majwega with 20 minutes left on the clock.
Robert Wurube, the Sudan striker, tried to grab a late goal for his side, but his effort was blocked by Majwega.
Ultimately, neither side was able to score in the closing stages of the match and the two sides drew 0-0.
