Late Ayite goal leaves Gambia reeling

Floyd Ayité scored a stoppage-time winner for Togo who beat Gambia 1-0 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Tuesday evening, in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier clash in Bakau.

The Fulham attacker found the back of the net in the 92nd minute to silence the home fans, and duly reignite their hopes of reaching next year's showpiece in Cameroon.

Togo scored late through Steeve Denkey in the reverse fixture In Lome last week, and the Sparrow-hawks underlined their tag as strong finishers as they secured a crucial win on their travels.

Victory moves Togo up to five points from four qualifiers and only two points behind Group D rivals Algeria and Benin. The latter claimed a 1-0 win over the Fennec Foxes's in Cotonou earlier today.

The Scorpions, who played so well in Lome and against Algeria before that, now see their hopes of reaching Cameroon dangle by a thread.

Tom Saintfiet's troops sit bottom of the group, having conjured a mere two points from their allotted fixtures.
