Sweden saw their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign coming to an end after suffering a 2-0 loss at the hands of England in the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Samara Arena.

The Blue-Yellow succumbed to goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli that saw the Three Lions through to the last four.

Although it was a cagey start in the encounter, the Swedes attacked through Viktor Claesson who attempted a long range effort, but it sailed wide over the cross bar without troubling Jordan Pickford.

After dominating possession, Harry Maguire broke the deadlock for England in the 30th minute when the defender made a great run into the box before a powerful header into the net.

Towards the end of the opening half, Raheem Sterling wasted a glorious opportunity to double their lead when he broke free in the box, beat his marker and saw his attempt to score their second blocked for a corner.

The Three Lions went to the tunnel leading 1-0.

However, they bounced back with hunger and fought hard to double their lead and Alli scored with a header on the far post to beat Robin Olsen.

Just after conceding, Sweden came back in search of a goal and Pickford made a brilliant save in the 62nd minute from close range.

With 29 minutes to go, the Blue-Yellow forced a fine save from Pickford after a swift counter attack to deny Marcus Berg from close range.

The Swedes made changes hoping to find a consolation, but could not beat Pickford, who had a great game between the posts.

In the end, Gareth Southgate’s men held onto their lead and they reached the semifinals and will wait for the winner between Russia and Croatia.
