RS Berkane defeated Zamalek 1-0 in the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup final first-leg match at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco on Monday morning.
Egyptian giants Zamalek will now host Moroccan outfit Berkane in the second-leg encounter in Alexandria on May 26.
The Oranges did most of the attacking in the opening stages of the game as they looked to beat Omar Salah in the White Knights goal.
Salah, who is the third choice Zamalek goalkeeper, had started with Mahmoud ‘Gennesh’ Abdel Rahim suspended and Emad el Sayed injured.
The White Knights defence which was led by Tunisian defender Hamid Nagguez frustrated the Oranges.
However, Berkane came close to scoring through Bakr El Helali four minutes before the half-time break.
The 31-year-old midfielder's deflected header hit the woodwork with Salah well-beaten as Zamalek survived a scare.
Zamalek were able to contain Berkane and the score was 0-0 at the interval.
The visitors pushed for the opening goal after the restart and they should have broken the deadlock through their star attacker Mahmoud Kahraba.
The 25-year-old player was sent through on goal, but somehow he missed the target without testing Adelali M'Hamdi in Berkane goal.
The Oranges applied some pressure on the White Knights defence in the final 20 minutes of the encounter.
Salman Ouald El Haj replaced Samir Ouidare in the 87th minute as Mounir Jaouani's side pushed for a late winning goal.
Berkane did grab a late goal when Togolese striker Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba scored in stoppage time to seal Berkane's 1-0 win over Zamalek.
