Burkina Faso defeated South Sudan 1-0 in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification Group B match at the Stade du 4 Août in Ouagadougou on Monday evening.
As a result, the Stallions finished at the top of Group B having qualified for the finals, while the Bright Stars remained fourth following an unsuccessful qualifying campaign.
Coach Kamou Malo adopted an offensive approach with attackers Lacina Traore, Alain Traore, Zakaria Sanogo and Bertrand Traore all starting for Burkina Faso.
However, the Stallions were frustrated by the Bright Stars’ defence which was led by Australia-based central defender Godfrey Okello.
The score was 0-0 at the interval with South Sudan having contained Burkina Faso in the first-half.
Joseph Mayang and Dominic Angelo were both introduced by South Sudan coach Cyprian Besong Ashu prior to the start of the second-half as the visitors looked to break the deadlock.
However, it was the Stallions, who opened the scoring through Bertrand Traore 10 minutes before the hour-mark.
The Aston Villa star scored after being set-up by Lacina Traore to make it 1-0 to Burkina Faso and it was his 12th international goal for the Stallions.
The hosts were reduced to 10 players in the 80th minute after their captain Charles Kabore, who celebrated his 100th cap for Burkina Faso against Uganda last week, was sent off after receiving his yellow card of the game.
The Stallions defended very well in the latter stages of the game despite being numerically disadvantaged and ultimately, the match ended in a 1-0 victory in favour of Burkina Faso.
