The African Wild Dogs will feel like they should have started their Group D campaign with a victory as Pele missed a penalty in the closing stages of the match which was played in Cameroon.
The Falcons of Jediane were the better side in the opening exchanges with their star striker Mohamed Abdelrahman looking hungry for goals on the night.
Abdelrahman connected with a great cross from Mazin Mohamedein, but the Al Hilal Omdurman center forward couldn’t keep his header on target with the African Wild Dogs’ defence exposed.
The African Wild Dogs did threaten in the 17th minute following a rare attack. Joseph Mendes hit the woodwork with goalkeeper Ali Abu-Eshrein well-beaten after the Sudanese were caught napping at the back.
Gomis then denied Abdelrahman with a fine save in stoppage time of first-half and Guinea-Bissau shot-stopper ensured that the score was 0-0 during the half-time break in Garoua.
The African Wild Dogs came back an improved side after the restart, but they were struggling to create chances for their targetman Piqueti, who was frustrated and isolated upfront.
However, this changed after Guinea-Bissau coach Baciro Cande introduced Omar Ambiri and Frederic Mendy as the West African side began creating goalscoring opportunities for their attackers.
Piquet cut inside from the right and unleashed a thunderous shot which was fantastically parried away by a well-positioned Abu-Eshrein inside the last 13 minutes of the encounter.
Guinea-Bissau were then awarded a late penalty after Ambiri was fouled in the box by Abu-Eshrein. However, Abu-Eshrein made amends by denying Pele from the spot-kick and Piquet hit the crossbar from the rebound.
Mendy had two late chances, but the Guinea-Bissau striker’s effort was cleared off the goal-line after Abu-Eshrein had missed a cross from the left. Mendy’s free header was then saved by Abu-Eshrein and ultimately, the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
