Third defeat leaves Ethiopia on the brink

by Staff Reporter

Sat October 11, 17:26

Ethiopia were left facing the harsh reality of not qualifying for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations after they were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Mali in Addis Ababa on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Abdoulay Diaby and Sambou Yatabaré handed Mali their second win from three group B outings.

The defeat leaves Ethiopia rooted to the bottom of group B with no points. Ethiopia were defeated by Algeria and then Malawi, before Mali piled further misery on coach Mariano Barreto and his troops.

Three games into their qualifying campaign, Ethiopia look a serious doubt courtesy of the defeats and will have a mountain to climb, should they wish to be present in Morocco in January next year.

Mali, meanwhile, extend their tally to six points, three clear of Malawi, who were beaten 2-0 by Algeria in Blantyre, earlier on Saturday.
