Uganda Cranes winger Brian Majwega was in good form as he helped home side Azam FC humble El Merreikh 2-0 in the first leg of the Preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
The former KCCA FC winger who only joined Azam FC last month kept the El Merreikh defenders busy in the game played in Dar es salaam.
Didier Kavumbagu scored early in the 7th minute before second half substitute John Bocco made it 2-0 after 71 minutes.
Azam FC are also top of the log in the Tanzania Vodafone League were dominant in the first half and should have scored more goals, but the likes of Kipre Tchetche and Frank Domayo were wasteful. Ugandan goalkeeper Salim Magoola was also excellent for the Sudan side.
El Merreikh returned strongly in the second half to dominate the match, but their players Ramadan Agab, Alla Yousif and Allan Wanga missed some chances.
With four minutes of added time Kenyan import Wanga should have pulled a goal back for El Merreikh, but his shot missed the target.
Defender Pascal Wawa who left El Merreikh during the transfer in December also played a vital role to help the Tanzania League champions win. Last year El Merreikh bowed out in the preliminary round after falling to Uganda’s KCCA FC.
