Equatorial Guinea fought back to claim a point in their Group C 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match against Benin at Bata Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Despite playing at home, Nzalang Nacional struggled in the match as the visitors managed to break the deadlock.
The hosts trailed for the better half of the match as the visitors took an early lead in the opening half through skipper Stephane Sessegnon who put the Squirrels in front on the stroke of half-time.
However, Emilio Nsue pulled a goal back for the Nzalang Nacional three minutes into the second half, ensuring Esteban Becker’s side walked away with a point.
The draw means both sides will trail group leaders Mali who won their opening match on Saturday against South Sudan after beating them 2-0.
On the other hand, South Sudan remain the only side in the group with a loss and their next match is set to be must wins for their hopes of making it to Gabon to remain alive.
Nzalang are scheduled to face South Sudan away for the second leg in September and this result against Benin means their hopes of making it to Gabon come 2017 rely on their second leg outcomes.
