Sao Tome & Principe have registered their first three points in Group F of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after defeating Libya 1-0 at home on Wednesday.
The teams came into the game having both suffered defeats at the hands of Morocco and Cape Verde in their first two qualifiers, turning their clash into a battle to move out of the ‘wooden spoon’ position.
Libya looked on course to win the game when Faical Al Badri’s goal midway through the first half put them in control, and they held the lead for the better part of an hour.
However, on 84 minutes, the Mediterranean Knights conceded an equaliser when Ahmed Al Trbi scored an own goal to make it 1-1.
And things went from bad to worse for the North Africans when Lacet Dos Santos netted in the 88th minute to secure a 2-1 win for the hosts.
The return fixture between Libya and Sao Tome & Principe is set for neutral Cairo on Monday 28 March.
