Ghana emerged 3-1 winners over Mozambique in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium in Accra on Thursday afternoon.

It took only six minutes for Ghana to break the deadlock and it was Frank Acheampong who netted with a powerful low shot to give the home side the lead.

The Black Stars were awarded a free-kick following a foul on Majeed Waris in the 15th minute. Mubarak Wakaso then placed his attempt from the set-piece over the crossbar.

In the 29th minute, Ghana full-back Harrison Afful pushed forward and unleashed an audacious strike from range, and his attempt failed to trouble Victor Soares in Mozambique goal.

Acheampong came very close to netting his second goal five minutes later, but his effort was blocked inside the Mozambique box as the home side looked to double their lead.

The score was 1-0 to the Black Stars of Ghana during the half-time thanks to Acheampong's early strike.

It was soon 2-0 to Ghana 12 minutes into the second-half when Christian Atsu's effort from range was cleared off the Black Mambas goal-line, but John Boye pounced and scored with a header.

A minute later's Jordan Ayew netted with a wonderful chip over Mozambique shot-stopper Soares who was well-beaten and Ghana's lead was extended to three goals.

However, the Black Mambas did pull one back in the 66th minute through Apson Manjate who headed home Elias Pelembe's curling cross from the right-hand side to make it 3-1.

The goal gave Mozambique some confidence and they began pushing forward in numbers, but Ghana backline looked solid.

The Black Mambas forced several corner-kicks in the final ten minutes of the game which were well defended against by the home side.

Ultimately, Ghana won 3-1 and they registered their third straight Group H victory which sees them sitting at the top of the group with nine points.

Fourth-placed Mozambique will now host Ghana at the Estádio do Zimpeto in Maputo on Sunday afternoon.
