Goals from Ricardo Gomes and Nuno Rocha handed Cape Verde a 2-1 win over Sao Tome and Principe in a Group F, Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.
Morocco qualify for Afcon 2017 in Gabon
Despite the win, Cape Verde cannot finish top of Group K following Morocco’s 1-1 draw against Libya on Friday night.
Morocco top the qualifying group with 13 points from five matches while Cape Verde ar ein second place with nine points from the same number of games.
Libya are in third place with four points while Sao Tome and Principe prop up the bottom of the group with three points.
The only way Cape Verde can qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon next years is as one of the highest placed second teams.
On the night against Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde controlled the opening half, but failed ot create any clear cut chances and went into the half time break locked at 0-0.
Five minutes into the second half Ricardo Gomes gave Cape Verde the lead, 1-0.
Cape Verde doubled their advantage in the 80th minute after a goal from Nuno Rocha to seal victory, 2-0.
Sao Tome and Principe did find a late consolation goal in the 88th minute, but it was too little too late as Cape Verde won 2-1.
