Cape Town City aim to keep up winning momentum

Cape Town City will look to keep up their winning form when they host Platinum Stars at Cape Town Stadium for an Absa Premiership clash. The match is set for 23 August 2017, kick-off at 19h30.

City, under new coach Benni McCarthy, began their league campaign with an impressive 1-0 away win over champions Bidvest Wits last Friday night. Lehlohonolo Majoro netted the only goal of the game a few minutes before half time to see the Capetonians make a major statement early in the campaign.

Added to a win over Polokwane City in the MTN8, this leaves McCarthy looking for a hat-trick of wins right at the start of his reign. The former Bafana Bafana legend will be happy that his side has kept two clean sheets, and will look to his forwards to hit their stride and put more chances into the back of the net.

Stars’ league season got off to a disappointing start as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Maritzburg United on Sunday. The Rustenburg side were well in the match for the first 70 minutes, but let it slip in the latter stages when they were caught by their opponent’s pace on the counter attack.

Dikwena were solid on the road last season, claiming 19 points and suffering just four defeats from 15 matches on the road. Coach Peter Butler will hope this trip to Cape Town inspires his side to lift their game.

In head-to-head stats, City and Stars have clashed in just two previous league matches, both of which took place last season. They were great matches for the visitors on each occasion, with Dikwena claiming a stunning 4-0 win in Cape Town in the first half of the campaign, but the Citizens replied with a 4-2 triumph in the return game in Rustenburg.

CT City’s line-up from their 1-0 win over Wits on 18 August: Walters, Dove (Seedat 77'), Gumede, Johannes, Mkhize, Putsche, Nodada, Matsi, Manyama (Fielies 87'), Masina, Majoro (Lakay 77').

Stars’ line-up from their 2-0 loss to Maritzburg on 20 August: Mzimela, Mere, Mwedihanga, Sithole, Zulu, Matlakala (Msomi 67’), Mkhabela, Ng’ambi, Nale (de Jongh 76’), Kunene, Shilongo (Majingo 85’).
