Sundowns, SuperSport set for Tshwane derby

by Graeme Jackson

Fri February 23, 11:30

Tshwane rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United will renew their rivalry when they meet in the Absa Premiership at Lucas Moripe Stadium on 24 February 2018, kick-off at 18h00.

Sundowns played to just their third league draw of the season when they were held 1-1 at home by Free State Stars on February 21. The Tshwane side has nonetheless put together a four-match unbeaten run in which they have claimed eight points from a possible 12.

The Brazilians have claimed just 13 points from 10 home matches this season, and coach Pitso Mosimane will want to see an improvement on this record in the final third of the league campaign.

SuperSport played to their seventh draw of the season when they were held 0-0 at bottom-of-the-log Platinum Stars on February 20. The Tshwane side has won just one of their last six league matches, picking up five points from a possible 18 in the sequence.

Matsatsantsa have claimed just nine points from 10 away matches this season. Their only victories on the road have come at Kaizer Chief back in August last year and at Maritzburg United last month.

In head-to-head terms, United and Sundowns have clashed in 53 league matches since 1990. The Brazilians have dominated the rivalry, claiming 28 wins compared to 14 for Matsatsantsa. The team in yellow have managed 12 wins from 26 home matches in the rivalry, suffering nine defeats in the process.

When the teams met earlier this season, Sundowns claimed a 2-0 away win thanks to goals from Hlompho Kekana and Themba Zwane. It was the Brazilians’ eight successive league in over Matsatsantsa, a sequence in which they have scored 20 goals and conceded just two.

Sundowns’ line-up from their 1-1 draw with Free State Stars on February 21: Onyango, Morena, Soumahoro (Madisha 25’), Nascimento, Langerman, Manyisa, Mabunda, Sirino (Ngoma 63’), Billiat, Brockie (T. Zwane 79’), Tau.

SuperSport’s line-up from their 0-0 draw with Platinum Stars on February 20: Pieterse, Nhlapo, Gould, Daniels, Bhasera, Phala (Mnyamane 65’), Furman, Letsholonyane (Mbule 84’), Modiba, Ngele (Mokoena 58’), Rusike.
