Aduana Stars started their 2018 CAF Confederation Cup Group A campaign with a 1-0 defeat to ASEC Mimosas at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan on Sunday.

The victory took the Ivory Coast giants to the top of the Group A standings, while Ghana's Stars are placed fourth.

Mimosas suffered a big blow just 17 minutes into the game as they were forced to make a change.

Their experienced midfielder Ahmed Hervé Diomande went down injured and he was replaced by Jean Poe.

However, the hosts launched attacks in search of the opening goal with Kouame Yao leading their attack.

The 1998 CAF Champions League winners were able to break the deadlock with the half-time break fast approaching.

Ahmed Toure beat Stars goalkeeper Joseph Addo with a header to make it 1-0 to Mimosas from Christian Angbandji's cross in the 39th minute.

The score was 1-0 to Mimosas during the half-time break.

The hosts were forced to make another substitution 12 minutes into the second-half.

Angbandji, who had sustained an injury, was replaced by Zana Coulibaly as Mimosas head coach Amani Yao Cesar made his second change.

The visitors tried to push for the equalizing goal, but they found it difficult to penetrate the Mimosas defence which was led by Burkina Faso defender Souleymane Koanda.

Stars introduced Bright Adjei, who is a striker by trade, in the 70th minute as the visitors searched for a late equalizer.

However, Mimosas were able to contain Stars in the dying minutes of the match and ultimately, they secured a 1-0 victory.
