ES Setif claimed a much-needed 2-1 win in their CAF Champions League North African derby against Group B rivals Difaa El Jadidi at 8 May 1945 Stadium on Tuesday night.
The result sees the Algerian side move to third place on the standings, six points adrift of leaders TP Mazembe and one behind compatriots MC Alger. The Moroccans drop to last place with one point from three outings.
Difaa got off to a flying start and claimed the lead in just the fourth minute, with Mohamed Bamaamar scoring a superb long-range volley which gave Setif goalkeeper Moustapha Zegba no chance whatsoever.
Yet the Algerian side fight back and equalised just after the 20-minute mark, with Habib Bouguelmouna firing home after great work from Houssam Guecha down the left flank.
The Moroccans boosted their attack in the second half by introducing forwards Anthony Okpotu and Simon Msuva from the bench, yet it was Setif who would find the right combination in the final third of the field as Guecha netted in the 89th minute to seal a 2-1 victory.
The reverse match between the teams will be played at El Abdi Stadium in El Jadida on July 27.
