Wydad Casablanca will take a narrow lead to Lucas Moripe Stadium for the second-leg Caf Champions League semifinal clash following a narrow 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Friday evening.
Having survived an early onslaught from the hosts, Sundowns hit the post in the 12th minute through a rasping Lebohang Maboe drive.
The Brazilians upper hand, though, didn't last long and Wydad duly opened the scoring in the 26th minute following a swift counter-attack. Salheddine Saidi provided the finishing touches with a thumping effort from close range.
Denis Onyango kept Wydad from doubling their advantage with a string of superb saves before Sundowns pulled level on the stroke of half-time. Anele Ngcongca well positioned to nod home from close range.
Wydad restored their lead two minutes after the break through Aouk Badi. The midfielder guiding the ball into an empty net after Onyango parried the initial effort.
The hosts continued to push forward in search of a greater advantage and after Zwane almost headed the ball into his own net, Gabriel Okechukwu fluffed a gilt-edged chance with the final kick of the game in a miss that could come back to haunt the Moroccans.
