Defending champions Vital’O FC on Friday were eliminated at the group stage of the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Club Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.
Coach Yaounde Kanyankore’s team who needed a win to qualify from Group C to storm the quarter finals only managed a 1-1 draw with Sudan’s El Merriekh FC in a game played at the Nyamirambo Stadium.
Laudit Mavugo gave Vital’O the lead in the 35th minute, but the Sudan champions El Merriekh leveled matters in the 65th minute with a well-taken strike by Mohamed Traore.
The draw meant the two teams finished with four points each, but El Merriekh enjoyed a better goal difference.
“We are very happy that after a bad start we are through to the quarters,” the team’s Egyptian import Mohamed Said Ayman told AfricanFootball.com after the game.
In an earlier Group B game, Djibouti’s Telecom FC also exited the tournament when they lost 2-1 to Atletico FC from Burundi.
Andre Tokoto Nduwimana and Fiston Nzomukunda netted for the Burundi team, while Mohamed Mustapha scored the lone goal for Telecom FC.
Tanzania’s Azam FC, APR (Rwanda), Rayon Sport (Rwanda), Police FC (Rwanda) and Uganda’s KCCA FC are the other teams who have already qualified for the quarterfinals.
Matches in the group stage of the regional tournament will climax on Sunday before the knockout round starts on Tuesday.
The event partly sponsored by the Rwanda President Paul Kagame will climax on August 24 with cash prizes for the best three teams.
