Cameroon giants Coton Sport were knocked off top spot of Group A in the CAF Confederation Cup after drawing 1-1 away to Mali’s Real Bamako on Sunday evening.
Coton still progress comfortably into the semifinals of Africa’s second-tier club competition, but now have Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly (who won Group B yesterday) standing between them and a place in the final.
The Cameroonians could have claimed top spot had they won in Mali against a Bamako side who had only an outside chance of progressing into the final four.
However, the 1-1 draw means they end on 11 points from their six matches and are forced into second place by Congo’s AC Leopards.
Leopards also ended on 11 points after their 4-1 victory at home to bottom-of-the-log ASEC Mimosas, but their superior head-to-head record sees them claim top spot and set up a semi meeting with Cote d’Ivoire’s Sewe Sport.
The semifinals will be played over two legs next month, on the weekends of 19-21 and 26-28 September.
