Al Ahly lifted their 8th
Egypt’s Super Cup on Sunday, after edging rivals Zamalek 5-4 on penalties at Cairo International Stadium.
The two teams were dragged into a penalty shoot-out that went to sudden death, after the game ended in a goalless draw.
Zamalek’s keeper Ahmed El-Shennawy saved Ahly’s first two attempts, but the ‘White Knights’ failed to take advantage of their opponents’ poor start with Sherif Ekramy blocking Ahmed Samir’s effort and Burkinabe midfielder Mohamed Koffi seeing his attempt flying over the crossbar.
And the ‘Red Devils’ could celebrate when Zamalek’s Ibrahim Salah hit the woodwork in sudden death.
The ‘White Knights’ have not defeated Ahly since 2007 with the ‘Red Devils’ enjoying an 18-match unbeaten run against their arch-rivals.
Ahly will now travel to Cameroon where they will face Coton Sport in Garoua on Saturday, in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup’s semi-final tie.
