Cairo giants Al Ahly were handed a boost ahead of their trip to Abidjan in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup’s final when they grabbed a last-minute 2-1 home win over Nasr in matchday 9 of the Egyptian Premier League on Sunday.
In the absence of several of their key players, rested for Saturday’s clash against Séwé Sport, the Red Devils came from behind to seal a third consecutive victory on the national stage.
Mohamed Zizo gave the promoted side the lead just before the break with a lobed finish over keeper Ahmed Adel.
Substitute Emad Meteb levelled the score from the penalty spot with five minutes to go, while a diving header from Ramadan Sobhi off a Hussein Sayed cross deep in extra-time secured the three points for Juan Carlos Garrido’s side.
The win sent Ahly to sixth place in the table, four points behind leaders and arch-rivals Zamalek who played one more game.
The Red Devils will now travel to Côte d’Ivoire in their quest to become the first Egyptian side to claim Africa’s second-tier club competition.
