Burkina Faso are sweating on the fitness of star forward Jonathan Pitroipa for today’s win or bust Group A match against Congo after he suffered a shoulder injury in the match against Equatorial Guinea.
Pitroipa was the best player at the AFCON two years ago, but he has struggled for form and goals at Equatorial Guinea 2015 with the 2013 Nations Cup losing finalists on the brink of a first round elimination.
Burkina Faso must win today against group leaders Congo to progress to the knockout stage of the tournament, while the Red Devils from Brazzaville need only a draw to advance.
Meanwhile, Burkina Faso defender Mohamed Koffi said he is puzzled that despite creating many chances the Stallions have failed to score in two matches in Equatorial Guinea.
“I am not sure what is going on. Two matches without a single goal is a great disappointment for Burkina. We are vice-champions,” said Koffi.
“Two years ago we scored a lot of goals, but this year nothing has gone our way. May be the gods of football are not with us.
“We need to question ourselves to get some confidence because it is not normal that a team like Burkina Faso plays two games without scoring.”
