Newcastle’s Ivoirian midfielder Cheick Tioté is likely to miss the rest of the season after undergoing a knee surgery in Qatar on Sunday.
The 28-year-old had to go in for operation after picking up an injury with Côte d’Ivoire at the early stages of the Africa Cup of Nations Equatorial Guinea 2015 last month.
And according to Magpies boss John Carver, Tioté will remain in the Middle East for a while before making his return to North England.
“Communication is not great at the minute so we are trying to get more and more information, but I think he'll stay there for a while,” Carver said.
“He's there because the surgeon who did his operation on his thigh when he was at FC Twente is out there. He’ll have a bit of time there and then come back, but I would say his season is probably over.”
It could mean the end of the Newcastle journey for the Côte d’Ivoire international, who is likely to make a move away from St James’ Park this summer.
