Zambia national team captain Rainford Kalaba said there’s no more attraction in qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations and that his focus is the FIFA World Cup.
Kalaba said Chipolopolo had been to many Afcon tournaments, had won the title before and the time is now for them to challenge for qualifying for the World’s football showpiece.
“We have been to the Africa Cup several times before and we have won it before. It is no longer as attractive as the World Cup is,” said Kalaba.
“All the players have one mentality and that is to qualify to the 2018 World Cup.”
The TP Mazembe midfielder was given the captain’s armband just before the 2015 Afcon tournament in Equatorial Guinea and he led the youthful Chipolopolo to a 2-0 win over Rwanda last weekend scoring one of the goals.
Meanwhile, coach Honour Janza, has criticized the pace the national team was taking in terms of rebuilding the national team saying it was a slow, difficult and painstaking job.
“Rebuilding a team is not an easy job. We have a tough job ahead of us and especially that we are having to pick a lot of young players who we are bring up to play at senior level,” he said.
“There are two ways about this but we are getting there.”
