ASEC Mimosas are travelling to Bamako in the Confederation Cup to face Onze Créateurs in the first leg of their round of 16 tie on Sunday.
The Ivoirian giants have enjoyed a good run of form lately, defeating Al-Ittihad 2-1 in Tunis in the previous round after being held in Abidjan, while taking the lead on the national stage following a 1-0 win over ASI Abengourou last Sunday.
ASEC coach Alain Gouaméné also received an attacking boost with the signing of Cameroonian striking duo Ulrich Messok and Dimitri Obama.
More used to competing at the highest level, in the CAF Champions League, the ‘Yellow and Black’, however, are making their fifth consecutive appearance in Africa’s second-tier club competition, reaching the group stage in last year’s edition.
Onze Créateurs are only making their second appearance at continental level, following a second round exit to Etoile du Sahel in the 2013 edition of the same competition.
After getting past RS Berkane of Morocco and Sahel SC of Niger, the Bamako’s Niaréla neighbourhood-based side will try to extend their 9-match unbeaten run through all competitions when they host the ‘Mimos’, to keep alive their chances of reaching the tournament’s play-offs before travelling to Abidjan for the return leg two weeks later.
It will be the first meeting between the two clubs in a CAF competition.
The match will kick off at Stade Modibo Keita at 19h00 CAT on Sunday.
