Mamelodi Sundowns and Vasco da Gama will have their first Nedbank Cup clash in the second semifinal, set to be staged at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday, 26 April 2015, kick-off at 15h00.
‘Downs have eliminated Thanda Royal Zulu (2-0 home), Platinum Stars (3-1 away) and Black Aces (2-0 away) to book their place in the final four of this year’s Nedbank Cup.
They will be looking to progress into the final for the first time since 2012 (when they lost 2-0 to Tshwane rivals SuperSport United) and give themselves a chance of adding to the three National Cups (1986, 1998 and 2008) they have in their trophy cabinet.
As for Vasco, they have beaten Highlands Park (2-0), Winners Park (3-2 after extra time, away), Maulti FET College (3-0 home) and Black Leopards (3-2 away) to earn a place in the semifinals for the first time in their history.
However, they will now be coming up against a top flight side for the first time and must prove that they are worthy of their place in the final four – away against a team which won the PSL title last season, no less.
This will be the first cup meeting of Sundowns and Vasco, though they have met twice before in league competition when the Cape side earned promotion to the top flight for the 2010/11 season.
The Brazilians won 1-0 both away and at home to complete a league ‘double’ over Vasco, with Zimbabwean striker Nyasha Mushekwi (who currently plays his football with Djurgårdens IF in Sweden) scoring both goals.
