The result left the two sides perfectly square on points, goal difference and goals scored at the end of the first round, two points adrift of group leaders Serbia who defeated Mexico 2-0 in Dunedin.
A drawing of lots had therefore to be conducted by the FIFA Organising Committee, leaving Uruguay in second and Mali in third.
However, the young Eagles advanced to the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.
Franco Acosta put the South Americans ahead in the 17th minute following a poor clearance from the Malian defence, while Adama Traoré levelled from a free-kick just before the break after Uruguay’s keeper Guruceaga was penalised for handling a back-pass.
The scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle following a goalless second half, as neither team was eager to take any risk.
