For the second time this year, Mali have been hit by the curse of the toss of the coin after their team were picked as the third best team in Group D of the FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand.
In February, the toss of the coin saw Guinea edged past their West African rivals to qualify for the quarterfinals of the AFCON 2015 in Equatorial Guinea after they were tied on all indicators at the end of the first round.
Mali will again curse their luck on Saturday after they failed to finish second in their group after they were at par with Uruguay on all counts after first round matches at New Zealand 2015.
Both finished on four points with all the other indicators the same - goals for 3, goals against 3 - and so the toss of the coin had to be used to determine who finished second and third in the group.
They will now wait to know who they will face in the Round of 16 with fellow Africans Ghana and Ukraine likely foes.
Uruguay will now set up an all-South American derby with Brazil in New Plymouth.
Uruguay upstaged five-time world champions Brazil to win the South American qualifiers with the Samba Stars finishing a disappointing fourth just enough to get them on the plane to New Zealand.
