Speaking to the media after their final training session on Friday
ahead of the crucial 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier against Gambia on Saturday
, Bafana Bafana defender Thulani Hlatshwayo says they’d like to play at Afcon once again.
The Bidvest Wits defender said it’s unfortunate not to have Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho due to an injury, however, he said they have enough defenders who could do the job.
“It’s unfortunate that Tower is not here but there’s Anele (Ngcongca) who I can play with, as a right back or vice versa,” said Hlatshwayo.

“We’re looking forward to the match and obviously we have to win our games, there’s only one team that has to qualify from the group unlike last year where there were two and we have to do the job during the qualifiers.”
Speaking about the fact that Bafana have failed to win a competitive match since November last year at the same venue, and the influence of Thulani Serero, Ayanda Patosi and May Mahlangu, the defender emphasised the importance of winning their matches.
“Yes we’ve not won since November, the coach (Shakes Mashaba) talked about that and worked with the strikers, we don’t score but then we keep clean sheet so it’s important that we win our games,” added Hlatshwayo.
“As players we’re not happy about how we performed at Afcon and a lot of guys including myself learned a lot by being there and we’d like to go there again.
“Serero, Mahlangu and Patosi are good players, they can change the game, they have individual brilliance and we will need that to win our matches.”
Group M consists of Mauritania, Bafana, Gambia and Cameroon, and this encounter is scheduled to get underway at 15:00
at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
