Djibouti and Burundi will kick-off of their qualification campaign for the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) when they meet in a Central-East Zone preliminary round, first leg match on Saturday.
Djibouti come into the match on the back of a crushing 8-1 defeat at the hands of Tunisia in their opening group qualifier for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. The minnows were totally outclassed by the North African heavyweights and will need to do some major regrouping under coach Gharsalli Noureddine ahead of this CHAN match.
As for Burundi, they too suffered a defeat in their opening group qualifier for the 2017 AFCON. The Swallows were beaten 3-1 away by Senegal last Saturday, a disappointing result for coach Ahcene Aït-Abdelmalek, though his side showed enough promise to suggest they could be competitive in the battle for a place in the CHAN finals.
Djibouti have never before qualified for the CHAN, while Burundi made their debut appearance at last year’s finals in South Africa, exiting the tournament in the first round.
The return leg of this preliminary round clash will be played in Burundi on the weekend of 3-5 July. The winners will face Ethiopia or Kenya in the final qualifying playoff round in October this year.
