Senegal secured a 3-1 home win against Gambia in Dakar on Saturday, in their zone West A opener of the 2016 CHAN qualifiers.
Niary-Tally striker Mamadou Niang put the Lions ahead after just 9 minutes of play at Stade Demba Diop, but the Scorpions levelled matters two minutes later through Salif Krubally.
However, 22-year-old playmaker Abdoulaye Ba found the back of the net on the stroke of half time, to send the locals with a narrow lead into the break.
Moustapha Seck’s protégés managed to hold onto their advantage in the second half, adding to Gambia’s misery in stoppage time thanks to another goal from Mamadou Niang.
The Senegalese have now all the cards in hand to progress to the next round, before travelling to Gambia for the second leg in a fortnight.
The aggregate winners will face Guinea or Liberia in the next round of qualifiers.
