Mauritania secured a 2-1 win over Sierra Leone in Nouakchott on Sunday night, in the first leg of their 2016 African Nations Championship qualifying tie.

Aly Abeid gave the ‘Mourabitounes’ the lead with a stunning 30-yard free-kick goal after just six minutes of play, while Taghy Takioulah Denna sent the locals with a two-goal advantage into the break with a successful attempt from the spot on the stroke of half time.

Sierra Leone managed to pull a goal back with ten minutes remaining, but that was too little too late for the visitors.

Still banned from hosting their home games on their soil over the Ebola threat, the Leone Stars will welcome Mauritania for the return leg at the same venue of Stade Olympique de Nouakchott.

The aggregate winners will face Guinea-Bissau or Mali in the next round of the qualifying campaign in October.
