Algeria’s USM Alger have gone three points clear at the top of Group B in the CAF Champions League after registering a 1-0 win over Sudan’s A Merreikh at Omar Hamadi Stadium in Algiers on Friday night.
The Algerians have now registered successive wins in the group and sit on six points, having beaten reigning champions ES Setif last month. Al Merreikh, meanwhile, remain second on three points, but could be overtaken by Setif or MC El Eulma, who meet later this weekend.
USMA started strongly and had two good chances to claim an early lead, though both Karim Baiteche andYoucef Belaili were guilty of spurning their opportunities.
The Sudanese visitors were able to hold out and take the game to half time with the score line blank.
However, less than 10 minutes into the second half, the hosts broke the deadlock through former Esperance de Tunis striker Youcef Belaili.
A short while later, USMA striker Andria went close to doubling the score, but his header flashed wide of the target.
Al Merreikh threatened an equaliser in what remained of the game, but they were unable to find the net, leaving Alger to pick up the three points.
The teams will next be in Champions League action on the weekend of 24-26 July
. USMA will host compatriots MC El Eulma, while Al Merreikh will be away to ES Setif.
