Mali held Benin to a 1-1 draw in Cotonou on Sunday, in their second Group C outing of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
In the absence of charismatic skipper Seydou Keita, who has hinted that he is considering international retirement, the Eagles took the lead at Stade de l’Amitié after 20 minutes of play, thanks to Club Brugge’s forward Abdoulaye Diaby.
SM Caen’s defender Jordan Adéoti levelled matters for the Squirrels in the 34th minute, with the two sides going into the break drawn at 1-1.
Aston Villa’s frontman Rudy Gestede and his teammates had several opportunities to take the lead in the second half, but the locals had to settle for the draw at the final whistle, unable to convert any of their chances.
The Malians will be happy with the result, as Alain Giresse’s men remain on top of Group C on 4 points, one clear of South Sudan who sealed a historic victory over Equatorial Guinea on Saturday.
