Etoile Sportive du Sahel were forced to settle for second place in their Group A of the Confederation Cup, despite a 2-1 home win over Espérance Tunis in Sousse on Saturday.

Levelled on points with the Tunisians at the end of the group stage, after seeing off Stade Malien 2-1 in Suez in the same time, Confederation Cup holders Al Ahly claimed top spot with a better goal difference.

Haythem Jouini put Espérance ahead in the 25th minute, sending the visitors with a narrow lead into the break.

However, Etoile’s striker Baghdad Bounedjah levelled matters from the penalty spot in the final minutes of the game, after Sameh Derbali handled the ball inside the box, before completing his brace deep into stoppage time to hand the locals the full points.

The Sousse-based outfit will battle Zamalek or Orlando Pirates for a place in the final of Africa’s second-tier clubs competition.
