Al Merreikh secured a 1-0 victory over TP Mazembe in Khartoum on Saturday, in the first leg of their 2015 CAF Champions League semifinal tie.

Goals from Francis Coffie and Bakri Babeker either side of half-time proved enough to hand the Sudanese the win, but Patrice Carteron’s men scored a crucial away goal before hosting their opponents in Lubumbashi.

Al Merreikh took a one-goal lead into the break, following a balanced first half where both sides shared chances.

Ivoirian striker Didier Lebri missed a couple of good opportunities for the locals in the opening minutes of the game, while Mazembe’s attacking duo of Mbwana Samatta and Roger Assale also failed to convert good chances.

However, Al Merreikh’s Ghanaian forward Francis Coffie took advantage of a poor clearance from Robert Kidiaba to open the scoring just before half-time.

Substitute Thomas Ulimwengu managed to level for the visitors in the 75th minute, but it took Bakri Babeker just five minutes to restore the locals’ one-goal advantage with a superb volley shot.

The ticket for the final remains completely up for grabs as today’s narrow winners are now facing a highly tricky trip to DR Congo.

The return leg will kick off at Stade TP Mazembe at 15h30 CAT on Sunday 4 October 2015.
