A late brace from Firmnin Mubele Ndombe saw DR Congo come from behind to beat Burundi 3-2 in an action packed 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier, first leg match at the Stade Prince Louis Rwagasore in Bujumbura on Thursday.

It was the perfect start for the away side with DR Congo taking the lead after only five minutes courtesy of a swift passing move which concluded with Yannick Bolasie finding the back of the net after only five minutes, 1-0.

Burundi took the game by the scruff of the neck after going behind and created numerous decent scoring chances, but their finishing was not up to par.

Finally in the 38th minute the home side made their pressure tell after a clinical finish from Cedric Amissi saw them draw level going into the half time break, 1-1.

Burundi continued in the same fashion after the break, but again their finishing in front of goal was poor.

Nonetheless, the home side persisted and took the lead in the 83rd minute thanks to another superb strike from Cedric Amissi, 2-1.

DR Congo, though, were not going to go down without a fight – cue super substitute Firmnin Mubele Ndombe.

The substitute managed to draw his side level in the 86th minute with a fine finish from just inside the box, 2-2, and then found the winner two minutes from time after rounding of another good passing movement from DR Congo, 3-2.

Burundi will have a mountain to climb in the second leg after conceding three goals at home.

The second leg will take place on Sunday, November 15 with kick-off set for 16h30.
