Benin managed to register a 2-1 victory when they hosted Burkina Faso in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday evening at Stade de l'Amitié in Cotonou, Benin.
Despite both sides failing to register an early goal as the Burkinabe took control of the proceedings, it was the Squirrels who scored against the run of play when skipper Stephane Sessegnon converted from the penalty spot.
It was 1-0 at half time and after the recess Prejuce Nakoulma levelled the matters in the 51st minute, bringing the visitors into the game.
With 15 minutes remaining on the scoreboard, both sides remained locked at 1-1 and the visitors knew that the score would suit them going to the home leg.
However, in the 84th minute, Benin’s Bello Babatunde put the hosts in the lead once again and ensured the Squirrels secured a 2-1 victory over the Burkinabe.
The hosts will take this narrow advantage into the return leg in Ouagadougou which is scheduled for next Tuesday, 17 November.
On the other hand, the Burkinabe will hope to get something at home and keep their qualification hopes to Russia alive.
