Libya have beaten Rwanda 1-0 in Sfax in the first leg of their 2018 World Cup qualifying tie on Friday afternoon.

The Mediterranean Knights emerged triumphant at the Stade Taieb Mhiri in Sfax, with the match held on neutral territory due to continuing political instability in Libya.

After a goalless first half, the ‘hosts’ claimed the lead three minutes after the interval when Faisal Al-Badri scored from the penalty spot.

The midfielder’s goal proved to be the decisive moment of the match, with Libya able to see out the victory.

However, the North Africans would have preferred a bigger margin of victory to take to the return game.

The second leg will be held in Kigali on Tuesday, 17 November, with the Wasps hoping to turn the tie in their favour.

The aggregate winners will join 19 other teams in the third and final phase of qualifying for Russia 2018.
