Etoile du Sahel coach Faouzi Benzarti says he wants to see his team “go to another level” and dedicated their Confederation Cup triumph to the people of Tunisia following terrorist attacks in Tunis last week.
Etoile defeated South Africa’s Orlando Pirates 1-0 in the return leg of the final in Sousse on Sunday evening to claim a 2-1 aggregate triumph and lift the Confederation Cup for a second time.
Benzarti explained that he prepared his team for the pressure they were going to come under in the final, and was proud of the way his team defended in the second half when Pirates dominated the match.
"We made a special preparation in view of the importance of the event,” Benzarti was quoted by CAF after the match.
“In the first half, we conducted a total pressure on the opponent. Unfortunately, the loss of [Baghdad] Bounedjah [to injury] penalised our offensive performance, in addition to the wind blowing hard.
“After the break, Orlando rushed in attack. But we were ready for such a scenario. We remained concentrated, defending vigorously.
“My team now has to go to another level. I dedicate this cup to the Tunisian people, who needed such a great joy, and the wonderful audience [at the ground in Sousse].”
Benzarti will have the chance to lead Etoile to the CAF Super Cup when they face Champions League winners TP Mazembe in February next year.
